Podcast: No more Thursday Breakfast Jams

This be the last one.

A thousand thanks for listening and all your support. It's a pretty amazing thing that a radio hack like myself got to take the driver's seat on primetime radio, first on Friday Breakfast Jam, and for the last year and a half, on Thursday Breakfast Jam. It has been an incredible opportunity and I am so grateful for all of the people that have come into my life because of my connection to KRCL.

Starting Monday, the new programming format and schedule goes into effect. Am I sad? A bit--but not so much because I'm losing my slot; rather, it's mostly because of the shows we're losing or have already lost. I'm optimistic about what's to come, and am especially excited not to wake up at 5am any more. I also think that midweek evenings will kick ass with Kristina on Tuesdays, Emily on Wednesdays, and yours truly on Thursdays.

So, please join me next Thursday evening in my new time slot: 8 to 10:30PM. (You can DVR 30 Rock and the Office. Or just come over my place and watch 'em after 10:30.)

Unfortunately, the CD burner pulled the same shit yesterday morning as last week—it recorded 79 minutes and then reported a disc error. Awesome.

Fortunately, it was the first disc that was FUBAR’d and the Atherton live in-studio was recorded on the second. Awesome.

And they were just that… awesome. So, enjoy the second disc worth of downloads and some shorter Atherton mp3s.

Well, I’ve only got one disc for y’all this morning. For some reason, the CD burner opted to record 79 minutes on the first disc AND THEN report a “disc error.” Brilliant. So, the second half of the show will have to suffice.

To make it up to you though, I’m including some live mp3s from Salt Lake’s The Mollies. Last Thursday, I sat in for Dainon on his fine program, Red Eye, and The Mollies were kind enough to swing by last minute and play. I’ve got some photos, too; maybe I’ll post ‘em some day.

Big thanks to Dainon, too, who provided me with presents, just for sitting in on his show and screwing it up! I like presents.

July 19: Chris + Anna from Slowtrain Music

Tomorrow, (Thursday, July 19) Chris + Anna, from Slowtrain Music, will be in studio about 8am. Besides being just about everyone’s favorite local record store, they’re hosting a kick-ass anniversary party, featuring eight (8!) great local bands on Saturday. And it’s free!

Chris + Anna are also about to release Around the Bend, a local compilation from some of the better mellow bands in the area. Tune in to hear a couple of tracks from the compilation before it’s even available for purchase!

So, set your radio dial to 90.9FM in Salt Lake City or 107.3FM in Park City. Or, point your internets to krcl.org to catch a live web stream.

Grizzled local veterans Atherton are set to release their new full-length record, Skyline Motel. They’ll stop by the studio about 8am to play a few songs live and give us a preview of what to expect come Friday.

Check out their CD release show Friday, August 3rd at the Post Theater at the University of Utah.

So, set your radio dial to 90.9FM in Salt Lake City or 107.3FM in Park City. Or, point your internets to krcl.org to catch a live web stream.

August 9: Save Our Wild Salmon + Laura Veirs

Save Our Wild Salmon; a nationwide coalition working to restore self-sustaining and healthy wild salmon to rivers, streams and oceans of the Pacific salmon states; will be in studio to talk about their organization and its mission, as well as the special Laura Veirs show they’re hosting.

Set during Outdoor Retailer on Saturday, August 11th, the concert will include some great gear raffles from the likes of Chaco sandals, Osprey backpacks and others. Plus, two 45-minute sets from Laura Veirs!

We’ll have some tickets to give away to the concert, and if we’re extra lucky, may even get a phone call from Laura, herself.

Plenty of screw-ups this morning, including a couple of iPod malfunctions and a full-on iPod meltdown, but it was so busy and such a fun show, I didn’t have time to worry about it.

Battle Bunny and Danger Wheels Robinson, two members of the Salt City Derby Girls, were in during the 7:00 hour to discus this Saturday’s bout. The Leave it to Cleavers are taking on the Death Dealers. Should be fun.

Then, during the 8:00 hour, The Mollies joined me in studio with a long list of instruments. KRCL being a volunteer organization and all, it’s tough to get a sound engineer out of bed (even for primetime programming during the morning drivetime). So, instead of setting this trio up in the sound studio, we ran it all acoustic through the vocal microphones in the on-air studio.

It was challenging, as the studio only has three mics—including mine—so I shared one with Vivian, the cellist. She used my flip-flop to steady the base of her cello and I had to suck in the gut to steer clear of hew bow while she played. Ah, professionalism!

Slingin’ off of Sherb

It’s tough being a displaced Red Sox fan. Especially when you’re in a town that doesn’t have a MLB team of its own [no offense Salt Lake Bees (or whatever your name happens to be this season)].

Daisuke wants me to watch him pitch. I'm trying, brother. Really.

The douches that run MLB have made it even tougher by trying to give exclusive rights to broadcast the MLB Extra Innings package solely to DirecTV. Extra Innings is an additional premium service that allows viewers to watch up to 60 baseball games per week; more importantly, it’s allowed me to watch Sox games, even though I haven’t lived in Boston in years. Until this season, Extra Innings has been available with all major cable and satellite providers. (Technically, it’s not official, but it’s pretty clear what MLB is partial to the exclusive deal with DirecTV.)

Bastards.

Luckily, due to an increase in Red Sox Nation population, the Sox are scheduled for 14 national broadcasts this year. But that still leaves 148 games. That’s where my buddy Sherb comes in.

He lives in western Maine, well within the broadcast area of NESN, where the majority of the games are televised. Sherb picked up a fancy doohickey pretty recently: a Slingbox.

A blessed piece of technology.

Essentially, it’s connected to his cable box and his internet feed and allows him (or me) to watch his local cable from anywhere in the world.

Thank goodness.

Bit of a rugged broadcast this morning. My apologies go out to you, especially if you tried to bare with it and listen anyway.

What was wrong? Good question, and I don't know the exact answer. I'm no sound engineer, after all. Luckily, we do have a very good sound engineer and he was able to correct the problem, so it shouldn't be something you have to deal with again.

To make things even more fun, after 79 minutes of recording, the CD recorder opted to spit out the first disc blank. So, we've only got the second half of the program available for download.

How are your phone skills?

If you’re a regular KRCL listener, then you probably already know that Radiothon is right around the corner. In fact, we’re already accepting wed pledges for Prethon.

Anyway, I’m in need of a few people that would be willing to come down and answer some phones during my Radiothon show, April 12 from 6 to 9 AM. You probably have questions, so here’s a conversation that you and I might have on this subject. You're in bold:

Wait a minute! Wait just a GD minute! 6 to 9 AM? That’s early! And three hours!

You’re correct. It is early, but you wouldn’t have to be there right at 6:00—although that would be especially lovely—and you certainly don’t have to be there for all three hours. If you drive to work, perhaps you could just plan on waking up a bit early and answering phones for 30 minutes or so.

Well, what exactly would I have to do?

It’s pretty simple, really. Hopefully, people will be calling to pledge their support to the Thursday Breakfast Jam. While hugs and kisses and love are all nice, this is America, so we’re hoping listener support will come through in the form of monetary pledges. When a listener calls, you answer the phone cordially and walk him or her through a pledge form, writing all pertinent information legibly. Each phone call generally lasts somewhere between 30 seconds and two minutes.

What’s in it for me?

You selfish bastard. No, seriously, I understand. It’s asking a lot to get you out of bed. Well, you’ll get to hang out at a real life radio station, which is pretty rad in and of itself; meet some interesting people (read: weirdos); enjoy a free, unhealthy breakfast; and lastly, not feel guilty about providing no financial support to the station, although I will undoubtedly ask for your pledge, too.

It’s fun and hectic and silly. Will you help? If so, please let me know when you plan to be at the station (located at 1971 West North Temple) and for how long. Thanks so much.

Funniest cycling moment ever

On Monday night, I went to a one-night cooking class that Jess had bought me. This being Utah and the location technically being in the suburbs (South Salt Lake, I’d guess), I wasn’t too surprised to find that the class was mostly full of women. Middle-aged, house-wife-looking, made-up, big nails and hair, really white teeth, kind of women.

It was a fun class. I learned a lot and the chef (Gretchen O’Connor) packed a lot of different recipes into a few hours.

Having ridden in on my bike that day, I grabbed my bag at the end of class (about 8:45PM), tossed it over my shoulder and picked up my helmet. One of the women turns and gives me a dumbfounded once-over.

“You rode your bike here?”

Here we go, I think. I’m not much of a preacher when it comes to bike commuting. However, if someone asks me about, I do my best to answer all of their questions and add a little sell: “You should try it,” etc.

I finally respond that yes, I did in fact ride my bike here (hence the helmet, gloves and rolled-up pant legs), and that I try to commute by bike to work as often as I can.

“But isn’t it dangerous? I mean, it’s so dark out.”

I tell her that I use lights—three, in fact—a blinking white light in the front and two blinking red lights in the rear. Further, I choose my routes a bit more carefully at night and try to ride on quiet streets with less traffic.

This would generally be the part of the conversation where I expect to hear questions like “Yeah, but why ride a bike when you could drive?” and start to plan my polite counterattack. The ‘sell,’ if you will.

That didn’t happen this time around.

“I don’t know. It still seems so dangerous,” she said. “Why don’t you let me give you a ride home? I’ve got a really big SUV and it’s just me in it.”

In my head I’m thinking, That’s the point, lady. But she was so damned sweet, albeit ignorant, all I had the heart to say was, “No, thank you. I don’t live far.”

As mentioned in a previous post, it's an interesting time for KRCL. Bottom line, we're looking to increase listenership. I figured being a little proactive and tapping into the social networking wouldn't hurt. So, Thursday Breakfast Jam now has its own MySpace profile.

Check it out, listen to the promos, and by all means, be its friend. Then, feel free to let the rest of your MySpace crew know. "Listen, dammit."

Ok. Where to begin?

So, it's been a while. There's been some changes.

Work sucked. A lot. Jess was burnt out on New York. I was approaching my threshold. So, we up and left. I'm back in Salt Lake. Landed a good job. Am buying a house. Yeah, I know. I've even been hanging out at KRCL again a bit, filling in for a morning show (below, you'll find mp3s from the latest show).

So, to respond to the Sara Zarrs, Oz Skiers, Sherbs, Four O'Clock Photos, and others in my life... here's your blog update.

Brooklyn Bridge, so hot right now

Riding over the Brooklyn Bridge last night, I had to stop, about halfway across with dozens of other cyclists and even more pedestrians. Why?

Because Disney was filming a commercial.

We had to stop and wait (and were asked not to yell) while some jackass dressed as a Disney prince pranced around the center of the bridge and exploited my daily commute.

I suspect that City Hall/DOT wouldn't have allowed Disney to close any of the East River vehicle crossings at 5:30 pm. Both organizations seem to be okay with closing the pedestrian path during the busiest time of the day for a couple of bucks though.

Standing by the food table, organizing bread products at my sister's college graduation party over the weekend. Mrs. E., my pre-school teacher approaches.

That's right, my pre-school teacher. You didn't hang out with yours over the weekend?

Ah, pre-school nap time... where I learned some of my best moves for the ladies.

Mrs. E. was old 22 years ago when I was her pupil. Imagine the conversation between she, my girlfriend and I. Go ahead, take a stab. You wouldn't be far off.

To this day, I remain close with some of my best pre-school friends.

For instance… Mrs. E. was happy to learn that I make my living by stringing together words and phrases; disappointed to discover that I don't remember the lyrics to Frera Jaqua in French, Spanish, German, Italian, or Mandarin.

Here's my new favorite website--at least for today.

It's called TurnHere.com and the idea is simple and fantastic: short video travel guides of cities and neighborhoods made by the people that actually live there. It's informative and entertaining! I've wasted all afternoon! Hooray!

No film for my Fort Greene neighborhood yet, but surprisingly, Jess' Kensington 'hood is represented here. And so is Red Hook.

For whatever reason, I am a headhunter's wet dream. Lately, I've been contacted by a new one about once every one-two weeks. I'm easy going. I let them put me in for whatever position they're trying to earn a commission on. I pull together the writing samples that they want. I put down extensive explanations of just what it is I do or have done. Still, I rarely get an interview through them and have yet to get a job offer.

Again, these are all recruiters that contact me, and not the other way around, so I suppose it's to be expected.

I got a pretty fantastic recruiter email yesterday. It was all reading pretty well until the third paragraph when I stumbled across this gem: "My client is an incredible ad agency in Park City, UT..."

But, I just moved from there less than a year ago. D'oh.

UPDATED: Bad month

Last year, 21 cyclists died in New York City.

This June, there's been three deaths, plus several terrible accidents. All of the accidents are the result of extremely difficult cycling conditions. Further, some are placing the blame of two of the deaths on city and city employee negligence.

Yesterday morning, Transportation Alternatives had a rally and press conference on the steps of City Hall to discuss the tragedies and call on Mayor Bloomberg to update and complete the city's Master Bicycle Plan.

Houston Street, where 23 year-old Derek Lake was killed, is nicknamed "Boulevard of Death" by bikers.

A Memorial Ride for the three fallen cyclists was hosted last night by Times Up!.

We met at the Intrepid on a rainy evening to honor the fallen cyclists.

Visual Resistance installs a ghost bike at the scene of each accident to remember those who have fallen and create visibility among drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Stopping at the site of Dr. Nacht's accident. He was struck while riding on the West Side Greenway by a crossing NYPD tow truck who didn't have the right of way and neglected to yield to Dr. Nacht.

Remembering Derek Lake. His accident occurred at LaGuardia Place and Houston. Many place blame on the DOT, because Lake lost control of his bike after riding over a metal construction plate on the street that was not legal. He then fell into the path of a large truck.

Rural Georgia's an interesting place. Especially when you visit a wealthy resort located just past the poverty.

At Barnsley Gardens, the high-end resort where the wedding was held, nearly every sentence directed toward me ended with a "sir"—often by men twice my age. A good example would be something like, "May I bring you another pina colada, sir?"

Yes you may.

Surprisingly, the motel I stayed at didn't offer the same amenities. While it did have a LARGE POOL—or, at least a sign that read LARGE POOL—the swimming area lacked bikinied-women and a menu full of cleverly titled cocktails. Come to think of it, I also didn't notice the steam room, hot tubs, spa and salon, shooting gallery, European-themed beer garden, private canoe pond, croquet lawn, mountain bike trails or tennis courts. But I'm sure they were all there.

Next up in the never-ending slew of weddings for mid-20s urbanites is the Andrew and Erica affair. For them, I head to Maine, one week from Saturday.

The dirty, dirty

I can count on one hand--two fingers really--how many times I've been below the Mason-Dixon Line (central and southern Florida don't count). It's a foreign land, really.

I realized that everything I know about the south comes from history books, The Daily Show, Outkast, and the Drive By Truckers.

So, like cramming for a final exam, I've got all of the DBT records on shuffle in an effort to bone up on southern culture.

LIST!: Why I'm a terrible adult

I consume blended iced beverages (Slurpees, Frappucinos, milk shakes) quickly enough to get a brain freeze.

I still drink Slurpees, Frappucinos and milk shakes. All too often.

I like to get lost on my bike and find my way home.

My diet consists mainly of water, pizza, pasta, and jujy fruits, which, oddly enough, are not part of the fruits and vegetables group.

If it's after 11pm, I'll probably take my time flipping past "Skinimax."

Related: my vocabulary is very strong when it comes to slang synonyms for "breasts."

I don't participate in office politics and wear my disgust for them visibly.

I spend all of my money. Foolishly.

I'm afraid of the doctor's office.

I'm currently reading a book recommended to me by my brother. He's nine.

Thursday, I'm headed to a screening of several episodes of Get a Life, the ultimate story of avoiding adulthood.

Right now, I'd rather be: riding my bike, playing MLB on PS2, laying in bed, skiing, playing with dogs. Or, really, doing just about anything else.

You stay classy, Yankee Stadium

Last night, standing in line to use the men's room. It's a very crowded, unorganized approach to the idea of a queue. Lots of jostling and aggressive alpha-dog-style eye contact.

Big, giant, thick-necked, tattooed fat man turns to me: "I'm gonna piss on your head. Right there on your head. And your hair will grow back. Like a Chia Pet. I'm gonna piss on your head and you're gonna grow a head full of grass."

And that was before he found out that I was a Red Sox fan.

I wouldn't mind a similar outcome for tonight's game, though I'm not expecting it. Unlike the struggling Johnson, the Yanks will pitch Mussina, who has been on fire so far this season. Luckily, so has Schilling, who will be throwing for the Sox. Look for me... I'll be at tonight's game being yelled at by the supporters of the Bronx Bums.

Five Boro Bike Disaster

Sunday was the Five Boro Bike Tour, an event I've really been looking forward to. It features 42 miles of traffic-free cycling (as well as a lot of walking and standing around) and 35,000 folks from all over the place.

It was a cool event and despite all the waiting around, I'd do it again. However, I was about as unlucky as one could be.

It's very easy to lose your cycling compadres, especially early on and especially-especially when heading into and coming out of Central Park. I was in a group of six friends and co-workers. Coming out of Central Park, I got left behind thanks to a poorly timed decision to let the cars cross Central Park North. No worries, I think, I'll just hurry and catch up. In doing so, I get my first of three flats on the tour. (THREE! THREE MOFO FLATS! This spring, I've put 400 miles on my bike, bent two fenders and still HADN'T gotten a flat... I got three on the bike tour.)

Between my complete lack of mechanical know-how and opting not to bring a small pump (as 4 of the 6 in our group were carrying one), I did a lot of walking. On the first blow-out, I walked about 14 blocks into Harlem and a volunteer helped me. Then, in a desperate rush to make up time, I got on the bike and hustled. The ride goes through Harlem into the Bronx very briefly, and back down into Manhattan onto the FDR highway. I bypassed the first rest area--—with a legitimate repair station--—in an effort to continue gaining back ground. This was a mistake.

After riding past, I sensed my tire going flat again. I stopped at the 92nd Street off-ramp (because we're literally riding on a closed highway), and borrowed a pump from the volunteer there. It wouldn't hold air and because the tube didn't actually blow out this time, I suspected there may be an issue with the actual tire and not just the tube. The volunteer recommended I walk back to the last repair station via York Street...
How far?, I ask.
Oh, I dunno, quarter-mile, he says.

Nope. It was a mile-and-a-half. I walked, pissed, while the whole back end of the tour rode by me. Finally reaching the rest stop and repair station--AND THIS IS WHERE IT GETS DOWN-RIGHT FICTIONAL--and notice that it's clearing out. People are yelling and screaming and the support vehicle is rolling by. I decide that I am pretty well screwed and am not destined to finish the ride, but, ask to get my tire repaired anyway. There was some glass, or something, left in the tire.

As the repair dude was finishing up, another guy comes up beside me, surveying the now ghost-town rest area and speaking loudly into a walkie talkie:
Yeah, I got the last one right here.
Looks like he missed the support vehicle.
Yeah, I'll take him.
Should be good to open up the highway to traffic again in a minute.

He tells me I'm going with him in his van, which means that if I get back on course, I wouldn't have ridden the whole thing. Lame. Perhaps he senses my frustration, because he stops short and asks:
How fast can you ride?
Er, I dunno, pretty fast, I guess.
Okay, he says. I'm gonna let you get back on the FDR, but you see this van [points to van]? I'm driving this van and if I pass you, you have to get off the highway or get the hell in it. Understand?
I nod, not understanding anything, except that I have to urinate like you read about and don't have time to do so.

In the words of Warren G, "I hops on my Schwinn and tell my homeys 'aight then,'" except it's a Fuji and my homeys are 20-plus miles ahead of me. Instead, all I'm met with when returning onto the FDR is a hurried case of surrealism and lonliness. Why? Because it's pretty strange to be riding a bike on a highway even with lots of other cyclists; it's about 900 times more bizarre to be the only cyclist on the highway and share the road with slow-moving ambulances, squad cars and bike tour support vehicles. Also, to add to the fiction of it all, it's at this point that I realize I am literally the last of 35,000 cyclists--not even a tour volunteer on bike lay behind me.

I start peddling my ass off, or at least my legs. Breathing heavy and wet with sweat. Hoping the tire will hold. Passing the odd bike tour vehicle. Then, the van rolled up on my left. Shit, I think, the gig is up. I have to get off the highway and head home, defeated.

Not the case. He shouts from across the van, You're doing great. As long as you can keep up this pace, you'll be fine!
(Note: I have a cheap cycling computer on my handlebars. It measures distance and speed. Also note: I generally ride flat terrain at about 14MPH or so. Back to the story...)

I glance down at the computer. It reads 23MPH! I am not heading downhill. Damn, I think, I cannot keep this up. Of course, I had to lie, and, unable to speak from breathing so heavy, I just flashed him and 80s-style-thumbs up.

Finally, I start passing the confused volunteer cyclists who had been certain that they were bringing up the rear. I make my way up the Queensboro bridge and begin passing regular riders. And so on. I passed so many. I continued to ride quickly (though nowhere near 23MPH). I made up so much ground!

Then, climbing the Verrazzano Bridge, the last bridge, the final climb, the tire blows out again. Ugh. It takes 40 minutes to get things straightened-out this go-around and I watch lots of obese people pass me. Sigh.

In the end, I finished. Long after my friends of course, but I finished nonetheless. My rear tire actually has a hole in it.

With a big weekend of riding planned, I opted to take a few days off from the bike and re-join the ranks of the underground commuters.

Before doing so though, I swung by the bike shop to have 'em give it the once over for the weekend.

"Dude, your back rim's bent to hell."

That makes two rims--front and back--that the City has beaten up on.

Tonight, for the second time in about 6 weeks, I'm seeing Josh Rouse perform. Last time, it was a solo acoustic affair at Joe's Pub. Tonight, it's a full band performance at Town Hall in support of his "Spanish" record, Subtitulos. I'll be in the third row.

Incidentally, my buddy Matt may still have an extra ticket if anyone is interested. "May" is the operative word. His tickets are not in the third row.

Also, everyone's favorite Idahoan (aside from the soon-to-be-birthday-gal, Kathleen, of course) is set to release his fourth record on Tuesday. Until that time, you can stream the new Josh Ritter, entitled The Animal Years, here.

At any rate, today is the Annual Mitzvah Tank Parade and while I don't really know what that means, other than what I have learned on Gothamist and Wikipedia, it seems to involve assuming that I'm Jewish.

In two completely different parts of the city, young Jewish boys, scattered from their RVs-turned-parade-vehicles, have attempted to capture my ear, based solely on the assumption that I shared their faith.

95 years later

Tomorrow marks the 95th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.

Like others, most of what I know about this terrible event is drawn from dramatized accounts of it (a movie was released in the 70s and several documentaries on the topic also exist).

For me, I was most overwhelmed by the account of it in Kevin Baker's Dreamland, a historical fiction piece that, while named after a Coney Island amusement park, follows the immigrant lives of several people throughout the entire city. One is a seamstress and activist at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company.

Even reading a simple encyclopedia entry about the fire is emotional enough.

We owe a lot to those women and that terrible event. Just a couple of years before the fire, the women at that same sweat shop staged a spontaneous walk-out that led to a city-wide strike, effectively shutting down garment production throughout the boroughs and ultimately (barely) raising their pay.

Ah, Buffalo Tom on the iPod. The song: "Sunday Night," from Sleepy Eyed. Such great, melodramatic, 90s alt rock—filled with reverb and warm distorted guitar on the chorus, and (ironically!) soft chorus-pedal guitar for the verse, complete with lyrical gems such as:

All kinds of ugly outside, that's right / and I'm all alone tonight.

And as the streetlights of my prospects dim / she turns in bed and thinks of him.

Friends pushed me far behind / I feel so empty, I could die.

Perfect for suburban teen angst. I first came across this record by checking it out of the Andover Public Library. I bought a used copy a few days later.

You know you're a high school nerd when you travel further to go to a different town's library because it offers CDs and is generally "cooler."

So, the last few days have really been all about making my quads as sore as possible, trying to put some mileage on my new friend.

When the legs have felt too heavy to lift, I've been busy working out my mouse-hand on the interweb, searching for interesting places to ride to, people to ride there with, and otherwise intriguing bicycle-related stuff.

Commuter Profiles
To promote Bike Month (May), Transportation Alternatives offers up some very interesting profiles. It's a cool way to make commuting to work seem more do-able (and to read about some nasty crashes). See them here.

Five Boro Bike Tour
Presented by Bike New York, the Five Boro Bike Tour is a pretty rad event. 30,000 cyclists of all levels ride a 42-mile, traffic-free course across each of NYC's five boros (Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island). Traffic-free means the city shuts down major roadways and bridges for this event, including 6th Ave in Manhattan, parts of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, and the Verrazano Bridge. Nuts. It goes down on May 7, but you should register before that here.

Abandoned Bicycles
A photo blog/gallery of bikes left behind throughout the city.

Time's Up!
An environmental non-profit looking to improve the sustainability of our city. Time's Up! does a lot for bike advocacy, from group rides to mechanical clinics to legal advice. Lots of neat stuff. Plus, as part of their Recycle a Bicycle campaign, you can volunteer to fix up some beaten rides. Fix two and the third is yours!

Fixed Gear, Here
Speaking of messengers, a lot of 'em ride fixed gear bikes. What's that, you ask? It's century-plus-old technology! Essentially, it's a one-gear bike that affords you more "feel" and control of the bike. The downside (or upside, depending on who you ask)? You can't coast. You have to constantly pedal. Mostly, these bikes are built or converted from the frame up by the riders themselves. However, as they grow in popularity, various shops and mechanics are beginning to cash in on the fad. Don't get trapped in the toilet

I'm a sucker for a good ad campaign that uses an unusual medium. Say for instance, the back of a bathroom stall.

Essentially, a giant sticker is placed on the inside of the stall door to make it look like you're trapped (i.e., a brick wall). A poster with the headline "Don't feel trapped in the toilet" is posted on the wall. In other words, eat bran and you can poo. No brick walls.

The trip to Salt Lake was well-timed. Helped me take my mind off some things here. It was warm as hell (Monday it pushed 70 in the Valley), but the skiing was still pretty darned good. And it was just nice to be that far above sea-level. Landing at JFK the other day, all the weight rushed back to me.

Ah, technology... I'm clumsily typing this entry from my phone (no spell check), I made it through LGA way too early because I printed my boarding pass at home, and at some point this morning, I'll watch an episode of "The Office" on my iPod.

All this so I don't have to think about what an uber shitty week it's been.

Salt Lake visit + Destroyer

Sometimes, you can even find a burned CD-R copy of this EP on ebay for a couple hundred clams. It's lovely and includes early versions of a couple tracks that made their way onto Nashville. Bonus: Songs Illinois has a cut from the forthcoming record.

Also, after mentioning on the 31st of last month that he would be returning to New York, I've been searching the interweb for news of the Josh Rouse April date. Here it is, via the Nettwerk label news page. He'll be at Townhall (second mention in one post!) with a full band on April 7 supporting the forthcoming record Subtitulo.

Neither rain nor snow will keep me from that show.

Four O'Clock Photo: Emma's a shy one

Speaking of bulk email, there is one "subscription" that I look forward to receiving every day: Four O'Clock Photo.

It's a product of my friend Emily. She's a darned good offline designer for a very strange company in Salt Lake. She's pretty overworked, entirely overeducated, and (I assume) very much under-appreciated. Emily spends the better part of her day working with images--both her own and stock photos.

At some point in September, she decided to start a mailing, offering up an image that she came across or captured, along with some clever commentary. My email address was illegally acquired in mid-October and every weekday since then, like FedEx, Emily's delivered.

A couple weeks back, I created a blogger ID for her, not really expecting her to use it. To my surprise, she's got a photoblog in the works. Check out some of the images from the past month or so here.

Unfortunately, she doesn't add her captions to the blog, but I'm trying to convince her to do so. Apparently, Emma is concerned that her family and co-workers may learn of her crass nature by reading these things. Worse things have happened.

The captions add a lot. And frankly, Emma is kind of crass. For instance, check out this one, for which she writes: They are Crack, and I am but a gluttonous whore.

Or, this modeling photo from her Momma's glory days: She farted right before this picture was taken. It came forth with such fervor, she surprised herself.

Anyway, at least one reader of this page will find this interesting. And that's in addition to me! After all, I do work for an email/interactive agency.

Essentially, Yahoo and AOL will start charging "postage" as a means of eliminating SPAM and confirming the identity of bulk mail senders.

Paying senders will be assured that their messages will be delivered to AOL users' main in-boxes and marked as "AOL Certified E-Mail." Unpaid messages will be subject to AOL's spam-filtering process, which diverts suspicious messages to a special spam folder. Most of these messages will also not be displayed with their original images and links. In other words, AOL stands to make a lot of dollars.

WOXY certainly helps me get through many a work day. Like any radio station worth listening to these days (or, streaming internet station, as it were), WOXY is going listener-supported beginning today.

At $9.95 for the "true-broadband, CD-quality" stream, frankly, I think they're asking a bit much. After all, one could tune into XM or Sirius for just a couple bucks more a month. Still, WOXY has a special thing going, and I'd like to see that little studio stay afloat. It's a truly important resource.

Heading to Joe's Pub tonight to see one of my very favorite musicians, Josh Rouse. I've never seen him play before (he had a bad habit of not passing through Salt Lake City in the couple of years that I was there), so I really can't express how excited I am. It's the second night of a two-night stint and while I would have enjoyed two nights chock-full of J Ro, I thought that seemed a little groupy-ish.

Word is, he'll be rocking the acoustic sans band and testing out new material for his forthcoming release, Subtitulos, a documentation of his new life as a Spaniard.

Leo the legend

At my last job in Utah at a marketing agency of sorts, I had the privilege of working with one of the most delightfully eccentric people I've ever known: Leo. I've considered posting about him in the past, but as I was just telling a friend about him this weekend, the legend is fresh in my mind.

Leo is a couple of years my senior and like me, has a degree in journalism. He was hired for the same position that I was (interactive copywriter), but at the time, had no marketing experience. He proved to be a good writer and have a firm grasp of the English language, but was not entirely apt with client criticism and pushiness.

Leo fun facts:
-He's small in stature and bone-thin.
- Despite living in a desert climate, he carried a large umbrella wherever he went.
- Leo prefers more classic headwear than that of the contemporary young man. His favorite, as pictured, remains the fedora.
- Leo didn't drive--a feat for a town as geographically large as Salt Lake--and was at the mercy of a fairly poor bus system, often arriving at work full hours before anyone else.
- Leo got his first job, with the Salt Lake Tribune, by insulting a managing editor and telling him that his paper was full of errors. When the editor didn't believe him, Leo began correcting the newspaper by hand everyday and sending it to the editor until he was hired on to the copy desk.
- Leo is obsessed with the idea of the American hobo and in some ways tried to emulate that great character. Specifically, Leo would never tell us what his weekend plans were on a Friday, but would come in Monday with stories of great adventure--a last minute trip to Vegas for a go at the craps table; a secret desert party that he heard of while hopping Greyhounds for fun and talking to characters with one-word names; etc.

I miss having Leo in my life.
Anyway, the work was divided up as follows: I handled the big client and Leo was responsible for all of the little clients. My client was demanding, more so than it should have been, and often made poor decisions leaving me feeling distressed. On the rare occasion that Leo would have to fill in for me, he would say something like "I don't know how you do that everyday" and would appear visibly stricken from the dealings with the client.

When I left the company, I got this email from my friend Mark a couple of weeks later. I can't say I was surprised.

By the way, you are missing out on major drama here at good old Company Name. After two weeks of teetering, Leo cracked yesterday. He started writing copy straight from The Shining, then had a two hour meeting with the Creative Director, then took his dictionary and went home, muttering "If you don't see me tomorrow, you'll never see me again". Today he didn't come in to work, so the Creative Director made me go to Leo's apartment with him and make sure he was alive. He didn't answer, and when we got back there was an e-mail from Leo saying he was quitting and moving to San Diego. Oh, also yesterday he wrote a four page ramble about being a hobo. I am not making that up. So now we have zero copywriters, but I'm not allowed to tell anyone that Leo quit, and everyone is asking me what to do about copy like I know or even care.

It's the weekend already. Almost. Thanks to a couple of post-MLK vacation days, I rocked a two-day work week.

After enjoying the Sufjan show, Jess and I got real friendly with my car's bucket seating as we drove from Brooklyn to Bethel, Maine. The plan, two days of skiing and visiting some old friends, particularly Sherb, Jamie, and Jamie's little one, Sophia.

Unfortunately, we missed the antics of Oz Skier Dave by mere hours at the very condo we were staying at -- Sherb's Carriage House Unit #1 (CHU1). Ozzy has accepted a position in Boulder, CO, with Freeskier magazine and seems to think that means he can truly make an ass of himself in each of the New England states on his way out.

Despite missing the shenanigans, a good time was had. It's a fine place, Bethel, with good people. Pictured below is one of those good persons, one of the newest. I believe the intention of this photo was to demonstrate that at 5 months, she has much more hair than I do. (Note: I am 307 months.)

I really don't even know how to explain this photo.

Sufjan Stevens @ Allen Room (Jazz at Lincoln Center)

Saturday (1.14.2006), I witnessed something very special: a pretty remarkable hour of music from Sufjan Stevens and co. at the Allen Room.

The Allen Room is the disconnected, satellite venue for the Lincoln Center's Jazz at Lincoln Center. Located on the fifth floor of the Time Warner Center, it is a space worth celebrating in and of itself. It's comfortable, even vast for its 500-seat capacity, with incredible acoustics. What truly sets it apart is a fifty-or-so-foot window, immediately behind the stage, opening up on to Columbus Circle and Central Park.

I saw Sufjan Stevens and the Illinoisemakers in Salt Lake when they toured for Illinois. It was in a sweatbox of a brick club called the Lofi Cafe, full to fire capacity despite the incredible heat. The show was fun, full of high-energy performances and state cheers and left me satisfied. Saturday's performance was nothing like that.

I saw the earlier of the two shows on Saturday. Immediately from the initial strings of "Casmir Pulaski Day," the opening song, through the hour-long performance, it was clear that we as an audience were in for something incredible. Stevens appeared nervous, which was endearing. There were no pom-poms or uniforms with a large embroidered "I." Instead, just pure musicianship.

Amidst the rumors of Stevens abandoning his quest to document each of the 50 states through song; with all the hype of mainstream media promoting his 2005 release with overwhelming zeal; while he somehow became an American household name; he and an army of musicians (15 in all, I believe) played beautifully. Though the concert featured cuts from Illinois predominantly, favorites from Seven Swans and Michigan found their way into the set. Nearly every song was re-worked or expanded upon, offering an alternate composition complete with a sound far richer than the recorded versions. Sometimes, it was like hearing a favorite song for the first time. It was lovely.

The roommate cast of characters continues

At least this time, it's just a weekend housemate.

The dozens of (well, dozen, anyway) Finding DMo regulars will remember my roommate woes from Salt Lake. The situation grew to be so comical, that it really became less woeful, and more like something to look forward to. What will he do next?

Well, there's a new chapter in the DMo book of wacky people he's lived with.

This weekend, I met the girl who shares our floor in the Snobox. With Adam still out of town, I brought Jess to Vermont for the weekend. We rolled in fairly late to find our new housemate drunk. By herself. She proceeded to take us round and read various signage off the walls aloud to us. (Note: I'd already been to the house three or four times. Also note: I can read.)

Luckily, I had parked rather poorly and was able to flee the scene under the guise of digging my car from a snow bank, leaving Jess to fend for herself. Eventually, Jess came out to help with the car—or rather, to escape the wackiness.
